The four colossal statues of Ramses II at the Great Temple of Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel

Ramses II’s monumental temple to the sun gods, with its Osiride statues and painted scenes of the battle of Kadesh.

The experience

The Temples of Abu Simbel

King Ramses II built the Great Temple at Abu Simbel and dedicated it to the sun gods. Inside, Osiride statues of the king line the hall, and painted scenes show his victory at the battle of Kadesh.

On two days of the year, the first rays of the morning sun travel the whole length of the temple and illuminate the inner shrine. Abu Simbel is the southernmost of the great temples, built at the edge of Nubia to impress, and to warn, all who approached.
