Cairo · Day programme
A thousand years of Islamic Cairo in a day: the Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque, Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i, Al-Muizz Street and the lanes of Khan el-Khalili.
The experience
Begin high above the city at Salah al-Din’s Citadel and the Ottoman domes of the Muhammad Ali Mosque, then descend to the great Mamluk mosque of Sultan Hassan and its neighbour, Al-Rifa’i.
The afternoon is on foot along Al-Muizz Street, among madrasas, gates and old houses, ending in the bazaar of Khan el-Khalili with time for coffee and a little careful bargaining.
